Perspective

You may have to be my side of 40 to appreciate this, but it made my day:

Chatting on the phone with a fellow 43 year old about yet another 43 year old who checks in for heart surgery to correct a leaky valve today, I found myself confused when she told me that our mutual friend, the patient, was just a little concerned about her doctor. She's been told he's the best in Chicago, and one of the best in the States, but she's a little shaken after meeting him face to face.

Less than confident that he's had the requisite experience.

After all, she confided, "he's only our age."

43.

I knew there was a reason she was my friend.

  • I smiled over the comment.

I'll never forget the day I started noticing that figures in authority were younger than me.

Imagine ... lovely bloke in uniform patiently explaining that I had been speeding excessively ... long story but it was a rental car and I had been nagging my ex about his speeding. I was picked up in the first 5 minutes of taking over the wheel on a long straight road on the plains in the midst of the mountains ... sigh.

Chatty bloke ... he shared that they picked a lot of tourists in rental cars speeding on that stretch of road.

  • LOL, ww. Likely he picks up lots of rental cars driven by wives who have nagged themselves into the driver's seat within the previous 5 minutes.

  • Sigh yes ... my ex was almost exploding with laughter in the passenger's seat but he had been speeding SO BADLY, well like me I guess.

BUT, and there is a but, I was lucky, you lose your driver's license at 140km p/h (90mph) in New Zealand.

I had started driving, suddenly noticed the speed I was doing, taken my foot off the accelerator and turned to my ex and said 'Oh', looked round, and the cop was pulling me over.

He had clocked me at 137km. I didn't feel confident about telling him I'd been doing 160km p/h and he'd caught me slowing ... I wasn't sure that would go down too well ... sigh again.

  • OK, not a comment about speeding or driving but about life changes after 40...

I'm ecstatic to have found your blog, Erin. I'm a couple of years before 50 and considering making a big life change such as yours, but of course still need to support myself by myself (just me and the cats). I've lived in lots of places in my life, even lived in Vienna on my own for a year-plus (without speaking German), so it's doable...after I get back up on speed on all of that high school and college Spanish, of course!

    Thanks for your blog, Erin!

  • Thank you, Dimi! I'm pretty ecstatic over your comment, too. I secretly like after 40 better than before 40, to be honest and I have this funny feeling the changes may just get faster and more furious (or not!) as I go from here.

I know the support yourself by yourself gig.

    I wish you the best!
